My milk supply was plummeting, and I did everything I could think of to try to increase it. I spent most of my days crying, pumping, and feeding, along with taking handfuls of brewers yeast and every other supplement I could find with no luck.
As I continued seeing no results I became depressed, anxious, and not the best person to live with. I was miserable, exhausted, and I could tell it was taking a toll on my husband as well.
One night, after I put my son to bed, my husband pointed out how miserable I was and I got up, slammed the bathroom door and took a bath (with my favorite stress relief bubble bath). I realized that we needed to stop for a moment and make some time for ourselves. I hadn’t even realized that I was spending every minute of every day obsessing about my son, worrying about infant related health issues, and being depressed about my milk supply. I needed a night off.
So I got out of the tub and I told my husband to pick out a movie because we were going to have a margarita movie night. I hadn’t had a drink since before I got pregnant with my son. That night, I needed a drink.
Of course, we certainly didn’t get “hammered”. But seriously, I couldn’t believe how much just chilling out, watching a movie, and sipping on a margarita made me feel 110% better.
I realized that just because we had a child, doesn’t mean that you stop making time for each other. In fact, it’s more important than ever. It is so easy to get wrapped up in whatever is going on with your kid. Whether it is breastfeeding issues or soccer practice; there is always going to be something.
We always make it a point to go on at least one date night each month, and if we don’t have the extra money; we’ve been known to sit home, have a few drinks, and play board games while our son sleeps over at his grandmas. We talk, and laugh, and it’s fun.
Everyone needs a break sometimes. You will wear yourself (and your marriage) out if you don’t make a little time to just have fun together.
